Botox or botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin used for the treatment of expression wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. Injected in small amounts, botox temporarily reduces muscular action and decreases wrinkles associated with the muscle over a period of 4-6 months.
The Botulinum Toxin or botox is injected in small amounts through very thin needles, directly into the muscle or just below the skin. We usually ask the patient to show us certain expressions in which the muscle becomes evident. Botox injection is done when the patient relaxes and the muscle stops contracting. The sensation of pain caused by the prick of the needle is mild.
The procedure is performed in a single session lasting 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately after the procedure the patient can return to normal life. The clinical effect of botox begins to be noticeable after the first 48 hours and reaches its maximum effect after one or two weeks. As time goes by after applying botox, the nerve endings will regenerate and after 4 to 6 months, muscle function will fully recover.
